Ready to hit the open road with your RV? Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or new to the RV lifestyle, having the right gear is crucial for a safe, comfortable, and hassle-free experience. Here's a comprehensive guide to the essential RV accessories every RV enthusiast should consider.

Safety Essentials

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Benefit: Helps prevent blowouts by ensuring your tires are always at the optimal pressure.

Description: A TPMS informs you about tire pressure and temperature, ensuring you're always in the know. It can be hard to know if the vehicle you are towing has a blowout, but a TPMS will alert the driver as soon as something like that happens, allowing the driver to pull over quickly and safely, preventing even more costly damage.

After researching different TPMS systems, we decided on the TST TPMS system with flow-through sensors. This feature allows you to add air to your tires without removing and reinstalling the sensor. Amazon carries the TST in many sensor options to accommodate the specific number of needed sensors for your RV setup.

Surge Protector

Benefit: Protects your RV’s electrical system from power surges when hooked to an electrical panel.

Description: A surge protector guards your RV's RV'stronics against sudden spikes in voltage, which can cause damage or even fires.

Our recommendation for RVs with installed surge protectors is the Southwire Surge Protector, an Amazon Choice Item. Always check with your RV manufacturer to see their specific recommendation if you already have a surge protector installed. Available on Amazon in 30 or 50 Amps, depending upon your RV's electrical system, RVs will want to choose the appropriate amperage.

If your RV does not have a factory-installed surge protector, we highly recommend the Power Watchdog Surge Protector. RV dealers, RV supply stores, and RV repair technicians widely sell the Power Watchdog. It is the highest-rated RV surge protector and offers Bluetooth wireless connectivity, so you can monitor your smartphone's voltage, amperage, and wattage in real time using our free mobile app. You can also purchase the Power Watchdog Surge Protector on Amazon. Tow Bar & Break Assist System

According to recent statistics, thousands of towing-related accidents occur yearly, many of which could be prevented with proper equipment.

Impact of Brake Failure

Many of these accidents involve brake failure, underscoring the need for reliable brake assist systems. If your braking system is not adequate for the weight you are hauling, the consequences can be dire. Many states now require brake assist equipment when towing to mitigate these disasters.

Safety Improvements with Proper Equipment

Studies have shown that tow bars and brake assist systems can reduce the likelihood of towing accidents by up to 50%.

Benefit: Ensures safe and efficient towing.

Description: A tow bar and brake assist system makes towing another vehicle safer and easier, giving you peace of mind on the road.

Our recommendation is the Blue Ox towing system. They offer a variety of tow bar materials and towing capacities. Blue Ox is the primer tow bar recommended by RV dealers and technicians. We highly recommend having an authorized Blue Ox dealer install the Blue Ox tow system. Some things are worth doing yourself, but we advise letting the professionals take on this task regarding proper installation and preserving the warranty. Please check out their website for more details.https://www.blueox.com/

We also encourage you to have the brake assist system done in tandem with your towing system by a professional. They will be able to recommend best which system is most appropriate for your specific needs.

Backup Camera

Benefit: Enhances visibility, maneuvering, and safety when reversing.

Description: A backup camera provides a clear view of what's behind you, preventing accidents and unnecessary damage while making parking what'sze. If you have ever watched someone try to back into a narrow campsite or parking spot without a backup camera, then surely you have witnessed your fair share of the dreaded pull forward and try again. This can be beyond frustrating for the driver and the spotter trying to guide the driver. Having a backup camera can reduce the stress and, quite frankly, the spectacle of other campers trying to help you park.

Emergency Roadside Kit & First Aid Kit

RV GPS

Benefit: Provides accurate navigation tailored for RVs.

Description: An RV GPS considers your vehicle's size and weight, helping you avoid low bridges and narrow roads and taking the guesswork in the vehicle's route planning.

Garmin RV 795 is our GPS, and we are happy with it. It was preinstalled when we purchased our RV, and we do not have any complaints. You can buy one directly from Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3Y1UbGt

We also have downloaded the RV Life Pro App on our Garmin and phones as a secondary trip planner. It, too, takes into account your RV size and weight when creating a travel route. We enjoy building out our trips on this app, which displays all the different parks on your route.

Wi-Fi or Cell Booster

Benefit: Improves internet connectivity on the go.

Description: Stay connected with a booster that enhances your internet access, making it easier to work or stream entertainment. Depending upon where you plan to travel, a portable Wi-Fi tower or Cell Booster may be necessary to acquire a signal. We use the T-Mobile 5G Gateway Home Internet. Occasionally, we must call T-Mobile to change our location before obtaining the signal in a new location. Still, after a year, we have only had a handful of days where the Gateway could not acquire any signal. In these cases, we used our hotspots and boosted their signals with our onboard Winneguard.

Leveling Blocks & Snap Pads

Benefit: Ensures a stable and level RV.

Description: Leveling blocks and snap pads help you park your RV on uneven terrain, ensuring stability and comfort inside.

Snap Pads protect your RV's leveling feet from getting tweaked out of shape. They also protect the ground surface from the leveling feet, which can damage pavement, concrete, and stone. With the snap pads on, we do not hear the metal feet moving on the hard surface below, which can be annoying when people move around the RV. We encourage you to check out what they offer or your specific RV.
